Admission

Requirements

Admission to the Graduate School of Global Politics (GSGP) is highly competitive, with only 8-10 candidates selected each year. The PhD candidates will be admitted by FU Berlin and the selected Chinese partner universities. In order to be considered, all candidates should exhibit excellent academic and research potential and be at the top of their graduating classes.

Requirements include:

  • Master’s degree in field of study which is essential for the GSGP PhD program;
  • Proof of excellent English language, verbal and writing abilities  (at the level C1 of the Common European Language Framework or equivalent)
  • Proof that the candidate meets all conditions to be the admitted for the dissertation.

The selection process of FU Berlin and the Chinese universities comprises the requirements of the GSGP and the respective requirements according to the universities’ own set of regulations for doctoral programs. Therefore, the requirements applying for the selection process might differ between both universities. For further information on the detailed admission requirements for either FU Berlin or the Chinese universities please contact phd@global-politics.org

For Students applying via FU Berlin for the GSGP

Following documents are required in order for an applicant to be considered by the selection commission:

  • overview of all work, internship and academic experience relevant to the program, submitted in block form (e.g. CV);
  • transcript of records from previous degrees, including proof of the successful completion of a Master’s degree or equivalent;
  • proof of English language ability at Level C1 of CEFR;  
  • statement of purpose that details the applicant’s reasons for applying to the program as well as the applicant’s future career plans  (maximum two pages);
  • dissertation proposal (maximum five to ten pages) – this should be a convincing, detailed and well elaborated plan for the dissertation and should provide proof that the candidate will be able to finalize the dissertation concept within three years;
  • a written statement of the promotion committee (Promotionsausschuss) of the FU Berlin that admission for the dissertation is possible;please contact our student advisor Bettina Rollow concerning this issue;
  • two expert opinions (Fachgutachten) of professors on the dissertation proposal;
  • a basic knowledge of German and Chinese is advantageous.

Selection will be made based on the quality of the documents listed above. However, the admission committee may invite applicants to an interview if there are questions regarding the application documents or if a decision has to be made between equally qualified candidates. Please note: For Chinese students studying at FUB, some exceptions with regard to the research stay abroad apply; please contact us concerning this issue. Freie Universitaet Berlin - China Scholarship Council (CSC) Joint Program 2010

In addition to the regular places at the GSGP being offered to Chinese nationals, we are happy to announce ten open PhD positions within the Freie Universitaet Berlin - China Scholarship Council (CSC) Joint Program 2010. These open positions have the same admission requirements as the regular places at the GSGP. Once you have been accepted at the GSGP, you can proceed to apply for a CSC scholarship. Please note: For Chinese students studying at FUB, some exceptions with regard to the research stay abroad apply; Please contact us concerning this issue.
