As world leaders gathered in South Africa to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela this week, a student at the Graduate School of Global Politics appeared on Deutsche Welle's Agenda show to talk about growing up in South Africa as Mandela emerged from prison.
Philani Mthembu spoke about remembering the day his parents left the house to go and vote in the elections that would make Mandela South Africa's first black President. He discussed the end of the Apartheid and the vast political transition South Africa made under Mandela's leadership, as well as the ongoing challenges the country faces today, in terms of both social and economic divisions.
